First Communion

First Communion Overview

Children who have received the Sacrament of Baptism in the Roman Catholic Church may register for our Faith Formation program (formerly known as CCE) beginning at age 3. Even if a child is not preparing for a sacrament in a given year, participation in Faith Formation is encouraged as part of an ongoing journey of catechesis—growing in faith, understanding Church teachings, and living as disciples of Jesus Christ.

First Sacraments Preparation

(First Reconciliation & First Holy Communion)

Children who have celebrated their 7th birthday before the start of the school year and are entering 2nd grade or higher may be eligible to enroll in the First Sacraments class, in addition to their regular Faith Formation class. This class provides focused formation for receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession) and Holy Communion for the first time. Children are guided to grow in their understanding of God’s mercy, the importance of the Mass, and how to deepen their relationship with Jesus.

Family Involvement

Parent participation is required.
While children attend class in a traditional classroom setting, parents attend formation sessions in a conference-style format, receiving the same material to support faith growth at home.

Classes take place on Sundays, with makeup options available as needed.

Not Baptized or Baptized in Another Faith Tradition?

If you, your child, or someone you know is between the ages of 7 and 16 and is either not baptized or was baptized in another Christian faith tradition, we offer an Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) process adapted for children and teens. To begin this journey, please schedule an appointment with Paul Stoessel at 281-494-1156 or email paul@sugarlandcatholic.com before attending your first session.

For older teens and adults (ages 17+)

Please visit our Adult Baptism/Becoming Catholic to learn how to become Catholic through the full OCIA process.

Faith Formation Requirements

Weekly Faith Formation classes are required for children baptized in the Catholic Church who are not enrolled in a Catholic school or an approved Catholic homeschool program.

Eligibility for the First Sacraments Class:

To enroll, your child must meet one of the following:

  • Be currently enrolled in their second consecutive year of parish Faith Formation, with at least 80% attendance in the first year
  • Be enrolled in a Catholic school
  • Be part of a pre-approved Catholic homeschool religion program

For questions about homeschool approval, contact us at faithformation@sugarlandcatholic.com

Online Registration

Online registration is available for your convenience. Registration typically opens the first week of July, and announcements are made in the parish bulletin, on the website, and through parish communications to notify families when registration becomes available.

We are currently using a new registration system, and your patience and feedback are appreciated as we continue to improve the process. If you encounter any issues, please contact: 281-494-1156 or via email at faithformation@sugarlandcatholic.com
